Should You Go to Epic Universe When It Opens? A Look at What to Expect

Epic Universe, Universal Orlando’s highly anticipated new theme park, is set to open in 2025. While the exact date hasn’t been announced yet, excitement is already building for what promises to be one of the biggest attractions to hit Orlando in years. Featuring themed lands like Celestial Park, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Super Nintendo World, and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, this park is sure to draw massive crowds. Although we don't have a confirmed opening date, summer 2025 seems like a safe bet, with May being a possible launch window. But with all the hype, should you plan a visit to Epic Universe when it first opens? Let’s explore what we can speculate about the park’s opening to help you decide.

Speculation About the Opening

Before diving into the specifics, it’s important to note that much of what we’ll discuss is speculative. As more details about tickets, pricing, and other aspects emerge, opinions may shift. However, based on what we know and can reasonably anticipate, here are some key factors to consider.

1. Crowd Sizes

You can expect Epic Universe to attract huge crowds from the moment it opens. The demand will be through the roof, and while Universal has plans to mitigate crowd sizes, the reality is that any brand-new park will see a surge of visitors eager to experience it. Patience will be key when navigating the park, as ride wait times are likely to be long. When Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure opened, the line was much publicized to be over 10 hours long. I personally am not interested in waiting all day for one ride. While I don’t expect any single attraction at Epic Universe to generate quite that level of demand—since every ride will be brand new—you never know. For example, during the Christmas season, I’ve seen lines to meet the Grinch at Universal exceed 5 hours, which I would never wait in. Additionally, I wonder if some rides will utilize a virtual queue system like Disney does for some of their top attractions. Virtual lines have their pros and cons, but traditionally Universal has leaned towards very long stand-by queues, so anticipate that being the case.

2. Pricing

With the principles of supply and demand at play, it’s likely that prices—especially for resorts—will be higher around the opening of Epic Universe. Universal will likely try to find a balance to avoid negative press around price gouging, but they will also aim to maximize profit. It’s reasonable to expect higher prices as the park opens, particularly for accommodations near the new park. However, this is speculative, and there’s always a chance that Universal will keep pricing in line with their other parks to maintain accessibility.

3. Navigating the Park

Being among the first to visit Epic Universe comes with its own set of challenges. Without established guides or strategies, navigating the park efficiently might feel like a bit of an adventure—or even a bit stressful. When we plan our trips, we do extensive research to maximize our time, but early visitors to Epic Universe might find the experience to be a bit like the wild west, with no clear paths to follow just yet.

4. New Attractions and Operational Kinks

New attractions are always exciting, but they also come with their own set of challenges. Since this is an entirely new park with all-new attractions, it may take some time for team members to optimize ride efficiency. Think of Disney’s Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which opened on June 28, 2024, and had its share of issues upon opening. Now imagine those challenges on a park-wide scale. Universal will undoubtedly conduct preview days for team members, media, and possibly annual pass holders to test everything, but it’s reasonable to anticipate that not everything will run as smoothly as planned initially. Remember Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure? It faced several operational hiccups and even had to temporarily close to address unforeseen issues, like bees in the Forbidden Forest. Ride closures do happen for mechanical issues or weather, but when a new ride opens, these closures can be even more frequent. It’s not uncommon for new rides to face all-day closures due to unforeseen technical issues or the need for adjustments. If your main interest in Epic Universe is for one specific ride, this could be risky. While I really hope all the rides run smoothly, high expectations can lead to disappointment if mechanical issues arise. This is why managing expectations is key. Having reasonable expectations will ensure you still have an enjoyable experience.

5. Ride Accessibility

Given the expected crowds and the newness of the park, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to experience every attraction on your list during a single visit. Some sacrifices will need to be made, and you’ll have to prioritize which rides and experiences are most important to you. This could be frustrating for some, especially if you’re hoping to experience everything the park has to offer in one go. If you think you’ll be able to visit Epic Universe for a week straight and see everything, you might need to adjust those expectations. Universal is likely to implement systems to manage crowd sizes, and while more details will be released closer to the opening, it’s important to adjust your expectations accordingly. And don’t forget about the other parks! Last time I checked, VelociCoaster was still amazing!

6. Other Universal Parks Might Be Less Crowded

One interesting possibility to consider is that the opening of Epic Universe might lead to lower crowds at Universal’s other parks, such as Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. With so much attention focused on the new park, the other parks could offer a more relaxed experience with shorter wait times and a different energy. This could make them an ideal choice for visitors who want to enjoy Universal without the intense crowds expected at Epic Universe.

7. It Might Be the Perfect Time for a Disney World Vacation

Another factor to consider is that the opening of Epic Universe could make 2025 the perfect time to plan a Disney World vacation if you’re looking for something less stressful. With all the attention on Universal’s new park, many families may prioritize visiting Epic Universe over Disney. Additionally, Disney is in the process of constructing several new lands that aren’t expected to be ready until 2026 or 2027. This means many families might delay their big Disney vacation until these new attractions open, potentially leading to lower crowds at Disney parks in 2025. If you’re looking for a more relaxed theme park experience with fewer crowds, 2025 could be an ideal time to visit Disney World while others flock to Epic Universe.

8. Consider Delaying Your Epic Universe Visit Until 2026 or 2027

Given the expected challenges, from large crowds to operational hiccups, delaying your visit to Epic Universe until 2026 or 2027 might be a wise choice. By then, the initial rush will have subsided, and Universal will have had time to iron out any issues with rides and park operations. Waiting a bit longer could result in a more enjoyable experience with fewer crowds, potentially lower prices, and a smoother overall visit. And as mentioned earlier, Disney is planning brand-new lands, so all eyes will be on Mickey Mouse in these years, making it a great time to visit Epic Universe without the initial rush.

Why You Should Consider Going

Despite the potential challenges, there are plenty of reasons why you might want to be one of the first to experience Epic Universe. The excitement of being among the first to explore a brand-new park, with its cutting-edge attractions and immersive lands, is undeniable. If you’re okay with the likelihood of larger crowds, possibly not getting to do everything on your list, and a potentially higher cost, then going for it could be an unforgettable experience.

For me personally, I’m thrilled to see what Epic Universe has to offer. Our family is planning a trip for 2025, and while we’ll likely avoid visiting in the first few months to let some of the kinks get worked out, we’re excited to explore the new lands and attractions. Managing expectations will be key, and we’re planning to enjoy the experience, even if it means not seeing everything on our first visit.
